Colin Jost Wouldn’t Help ScarJo Rehearse Black Widow Due of Spoilers

Scarlett Johansson said that her husband, Colin Jost, would not help her run through lines for Black Widow in order to avoid spoilers. Having been acting since 1994, Johansson has had a powerhouse of a career so far. She has worked on independent features, such as Lost in Translation, as well as big studio movies, including her performances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She earned two Oscar nominations in 2020 for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit. Jost is a writer and an actor, having earned 11 Primetime Emmy nominations for his work on Saturday Night Live.

The upcoming solo Marvel film follows the title hero, also known as Natasha Romanoff (Johansson). Set after Captain America: Civil War, a dangerous scheme forces her to face her past as a spy. The film is directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and written by Eric Pearson (Thor: Ragnarok). The film also stars Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov, and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff. After the movie’s release date has been delayed three times, it will finally be coming out on July 9 both in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access.

ComicBook covered Johansson’s interview while promoting Black Widow. Since her shooting schedule on the Marvel film happened to align well with Jost’s for filming Tom and Jerry, Johansson thought it would be helpful to read through some lines with him. She was surprised to learn that he would not read lines with her in order to avoid any spoilers about the movie. Read below for her full story on the matter:

“He doesn’t like any spoilers, though, so I can’t tell him anything. And he doesn’t even pry. When we were shooting this film in London, Colin was also there shooting Tom & Jerry – which worked out great ’cause we were together in the same city for a long time, which is rare. If I was in the middle of a big action set piece or sequence or whatever … he was just not wanting to hear anything about it. Anything about the details. Of course he wants to know, ‘How was your day?’, but as soon as it would bleed into, ‘Can you read the scene with [me]?’ he was like, ‘Am I gonna get any spoilers or like … ?’ He wanted to know ‘spoiler alert’ before we read lines together. Can you believe that?”

With this film marking the end of Johansson playing Natasha, this will likely mean a new chapter in the actor’s career. While this was not the only role she was doing over the last several years, her place in these films has been very significant. Her next feature is Sing 2, which is due on December 22. Meanwhile, Jost has no upcoming credits, and he’s mentioned in the past that he is preparing to leave SNL.

With how tight-lipped Marvel productions are, Jost had the opportunity to learn about spoilers that very few others had access to. However, he went out of his way to make sure that his eyes never came across any spoilers, even when it involved helping his wife. After fans have been desperately wanting a Black Widow solo film for years, it is finally happening, but as a farewell to Natasha. Perhaps this movie could lead to more prequel solo films for other heroes in the future.
